One of the first decisions every new reseller faces isn’t which supplier to use — it’s whether to buy a mixed general merchandise pallet or a pallet focused on one category, like tools, TVs, or trainers. Both can be profitable. They just suit different people, budgets, and selling routes. Here’s how to work out which one makes sense for you.
Mixed pallets: broader, but more sorting
A mixed or general merchandise pallet gives you a bit of everything — electronics, homeware, toys, the occasional oddity. The upside is variety: if one item type is slow to sell, another usually isn’t, and you’re not relying on demand for a single category. The downside is that you need to be comfortable listing across several platforms and categories at once, and grading each item individually takes longer.
Mixed pallets tend to suit resellers doing car boot sales, market stalls, or Facebook Marketplace bundles, where buyers expect a browse-and-discover experience rather than searching for one specific product.
Category-specific pallets: more focus, easier pricing
A category-specific pallet — tools, TVs, trainers, toys — means every item you unbox is something you already understand how to price and where to sell. That makes research faster: check sold listings for that one category, learn the going rate, and you’re set for the whole pallet rather than starting from scratch item by item. It also lets you build a reputation and a returning customer base in that niche, which is harder to do with a mixed box.
The trade-off is concentration risk: if that category has a quiet month, your whole pallet is affected rather than just part of it.
Which should you buy first?
- New to reselling and want to learn the ropes with lower risk per item? A mixed pallet is a gentler introduction.
- Already know a category well — trade background in tools, a good eye for sneakers, an existing electronics side hustle? Go category-specific and lean on that knowledge.
- Selling mainly at car boots or in bulk bundles? Mixed pallets fit that model better.
- Selling individually on eBay with proper listings and photos? Category-specific pallets are usually more efficient to work through.
